Hampton Roads Pride is a 501(c)3 non profit organization incorporated in 1997 to INSTILL PRIDE, CELEBRATE UNITY and EMBRACE DIVERSITY in the Hampton Roads gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (GLBT) community by creating VISIBILITY and PROMOTING FULL HUMAN and CIVIL RIGHTS through EDUCATION, CELEBRATIONS and NETWORKING. The organization does numerous things that benefit the community such as the annual scholarship awards that total in excess of $52,000 over the past 12 years.. Additionally, the organization has done annual food drives ( the Turkey Trot ) prior to Thanksgiving to benefit clients of TACT, Tidewater Aids Community Taskforce, a local AIDS service organization, as well as annual toy drives and backpack drive (school supplies) that benefit children of clients of TACT and Chesapeake Child Protective Services. Also every year, the organization produces a harbor cruise that takes 300 ticket holders on an early evening cruise through the Hampton Roads harbor with heavy hordoerves, full bar and musical entertainment. We also produce three pageants during the year honoring a queen (female impersonator) a king ( male impersonator) and a booger queen ( we have no idea what theyre attempting to impersonate).
The biggest event that Hampton Roads Pride produces is Out in the Park, a gay pride celebration. For the past 3 years it has been held at Chesapeake City Park. Entertainment on the large stage has included live bands, comedians , keynote speakers, and drag performers. Approximately 75 vendors present their products and services, and include businesses that are GLBT owned or friendly. Food vendors supply typical fair type food for a reasonable price. For the past 3 years HR Pride has provided a beer garden whereas the proceeds cover the largest portion of the costs of the event. Attendance has grown to over 6000 in recent years and is now the largest gay pride celebration in the state of Virginia. The purpose of the event is to not only celebrate our community, but to let members feel a sense of solidarity.
